I'm a firefighter, and I love it. best job you could ever ask for. I don't know where you're at or what CPAT they use there, but I hope you were in shape, cuz it shows your cardiovascular conditioning quick fast and in a hurry. good luck/ hope it went well for you. let us know.

i passed it, i had 1min and 17seconds left. its 8 events:
1. stair climber (50lb vest & 25lb shoulder weights)
2. hose pull
3. equipment carry
4. ladder raise
5. forcible entry
6. search
7. rescue
8. ceiling breach and pull

all those with the 50lb vest! the stair climber is hard and the dummy drag is a bitch just cuz your wore out cuz of the stair climber. but other than that its not that hard. just gotta keep a steady pace and not be a pussy and quit!

thanks for the support Fester!
thanks to you too bigdumbox, how long have you been a firefighter? in Columbus they work 24 on and 48 off shifts, how do they do it where your from?

Congrats Russ. I completed the same CPAT, and it can be a bi@tch if you're not ready. seems like the stair climber is the event that gets most people. 60 steps a minute sounds like cake to most people, but the slowness of the pace might actually be harder than a quicker pace would be.

I'll have 5 years on the job this December, and I can't say enough good things about it. as far as I'm concerned, best job/career EVER. may not pay much, but the perks make it so great. ya, we work the same 24 on, 48 off. I have so much time off work it gets sickening sometimes. add on vacation days, personal days, and sick days and I work maybe 100 shifts a year. so I'm off work more than 2/3 the time.

work a second job on your days off if you need the money, or if you just need something to do. or don't. that's what's so great, you have all the flexibility in the world.

good luck bro, if you get the job, I'm sure you'll love it.

thanks Big, im pretty sure ill like it too! i know a couple of folks on our local fire dept and they dont have a bad word to say about it. a lot of the firemen around here do side work on their off days. whether it be plumbing,HVAC,tiling, or whatever its usually under the table and pays good. im looking at doing a little tile work and continuing to work for Gravity Werx as the "do boy"! lol thanks again!

academy? what do you mean when you say that? what all does that involve?

in Columbus this is what we have to do to get hired:

orientation
CPAT
interview
drug test
lie detectors test
interview with chief

then your kinda in lingo until you pass a couple of things

rookie school
EMT classes
*you get payed while doing the last 2 things above*

then you get hired.
