basicly what I am wanting to do is fill areas with a custom pattern using the paintbucket tool like a brushed stainless steel pattern and other things like that I have high quality images of some stainless but that's as far as I got... I'm a newbee

Well, first you need to make sure your starting image is seemless, meaning you can connect the image right to the side without being able to see the connection...if it is not you can make a copy of the image, then mirror it horizontally and line up the two sides and then join the layer and then mirror it vertically, align the sides and then join the layers again. Once you got that you are going to crop you work space to the size of your pattern. Then go to edit->define pattern->then give it a name. Once do with that you can do a edit->fill or you can do a layer->layer style->pattern overlay...etc. Hope this helps.

RJ nailed it right on the money. only other thing i could add to that is the possiblity of just taking the image you have and applying a layer mask to the size and shape your wanting it. But that's if the file is large and don't need to be tiled. but if you'll need that image to tile seamlessly then follow RJ's info and your in good shape
