I am thinking about putting a tailgate skin on my 97 stepside Chevrolet. If I do this how do I need to brace the bedsides to keep from moving and how would I smoothe the seems out. Currently I have shaved taillights but the bedside from there down is fiberglass. How can I attach a skin and keep it from cracking? My taillight fillers are metal and the bed cap is metal so that can be welded. Just not sure about the rest.

I'm building a fiberglass full skin for generation 3 rangers. I've noticed that the metal skin will crack with time against the fiberglass beds. But if you want to try the metal skin, just weld some 18 gauge sheetmetal to the outer edges like a box and find some factory mounting locations to bolt it to like the inner structure to the side. Then just weld in your cross bracing for the top, bottom, and center. I used fusor adhesive meant for universal applications the first time. Then just glue it and bolt it in, followed by body work.

Does anyone else have any ideas to prevent cracking from the metal to the fiberglass bedsides?
