i cranked the truck up and the tank was low on pressure but the pressure switch didn't kick the compressors on. so while i was driving it i heard a loud hissing noise and smoke started coming from under the hood. so this is what i found...

some kind of fluid went everywhere. it looks like it came from the black cylinder thing (don't know what it is). the wires for the compressors and pressure switch are fried coming from the relays. it burned a hole in the hose to the right of the wires (for the a/c i think). a shop wired all of this 1 1/2 years ago and this is the first time something like this has happened. and again the pressure switch stopped working a couple of minutes before. does anyone know what could have caused the wiring to burn up, what is the fluid that went everywhere, and what is the black cylinder thing?

a wire got exposed and grounded out somewhere probally that black canister is evap canister was it gas that came out???

WOW...well, that black canister looks like a charcol canister...used for emssion purposes in your Fuel System...If i am seeing this correctly, it looks like the prongs from the clamp (above the wire bundle that is burnt) might have fraid the electrical tape and then the insulation to wires over time. This might have exposed the bare wire from a 12v source and also from a Ground source and then after driving the 2 wires touched, arched, and then caused everything else to go up in flames...so to speak. Thats what it look like to me.

Any way, i also noticed wire nuts (Bottom left) in your engine compartment. Although this method of using wirenuts may work, i advise you properly connect the two wires together...other wise, you could be looking into another burnout...

Good luck, and i hope you get your truck back on the road soon...

that was quick, thanks for the replies. keef, whatever fluid went everywhere looked like gas in color, but it didn't smell like it or anything else that i can think of, so im not sure. jjaun1, what you said makes sense, thats probably what happened. also, i will definitely be soldering all the wires. im still not sure what or why this fluid went everywhere. i guess it came out of the canister, does anything need to be refilled?

are those heater core hoses close by? it looks like one is burn that fluid may have been water

The fluid is probably coolant or the fluid from your ac system (depends on what the hose is that burned up) This could have also been caused by using a ground wire that is smaller then the power wire. The ground, if smaller, will heat up and could burn through itself and other wires then causeing wires to touch and ground out and just make the problem worse. good luck with that.

the hose that is burned to the right of the wiring harness in the pic is coming from the a/c compressor. shouldn't there just be air going through it or would there be some kind of fluid? where the hose coming out of the canister connects to a hardline, it looks like that is where the fluid came out of because its all over that connection. what is inside the canister? and what would have caused it to spray out?

The canister is just a charcoal canister and doesn't have any fluid in it. You said you heard a hissing also. That was the pressure from the ac system coming out. There is fluid in the ac system. The hardline with the red cap would be an ac line.

that makes sense, thanks. also, will i need to replace the relays (which are the 30/40 amp ones). if so, should i replace them with 80 amp ones or are the 30/40 amps fine? im running two 380's.

The 30/40 amp should be fine but wouldn't hurt to replace them with the same thing. I always wire them into the ground side of the compressor. I think it makes them last longer. Make sure you use the same size wires for power and ground on the same circuit.
