I know a lot of places in Oklahoma where you can start out around $20/hour. Some even have sign on bonuses. Not a bad skill to learn.

i agree w/ chris. I'm a CNC machinist in a plastic injection mold shop and there are only two guys including myself under the age of 35. This industry needs more young people so the more you know as a younger person you can make more walking in the door.

I took metal trades which was arc mig and tig welding and manual lathes and manual mills in high school, went on to college where i took preciion machining more manual mills nd lathes then went up to cnc mills and lathes have an associates degree. I know programming, and setup... I had the hardest time finding a machinist job after i was out of school then when i did i started a an operator making 10 bux an hour. Also in school it was great i designed and programmed parts that were cool and i could use in the production world i was bored, making 1000 parts for some printer from kodak ill never see lost my interest so now I work in a salt mine mking double my machinist pay
Just my insight Joe

Machine shops are going under all the time. Its too competitive and the employees often get the short end of the dollar. But you could always get a nice job in china.

I was thinking of doing the same thing as well as taking some automotive classes, including body work and motor work. Also some welding classes. Will all of this be worth it? I make decent money now and I work inside and don't usually get dirty. But I never look foward going to work in the morning. I know I would enjoy it if I was getting dirty in a shop.

Texas, yeah you can find a job because oil is a million fucking dollars. When the war over seas steps down a notch and corn claims more cotton feilds those jobs will be a memory.A old streetrod builder I worked with for years broke it down for me one day.Back in the seventys he owned a speed shop selling parts. When jegs and summit came into power he went under because he could not compete with the larger whole sale.Along with him all the local machine shops went under due to the fact that you could now buy a new motor cheaper than you could have it built. If you ran one today it would involve fixing farm tractors and building motors for circle track cars at a discount.CNC seems like a good feild but all computer related markets are flooded and I could see it being dificult finding a job.If you did find a job it would be making the same parts day and night not making killer one off truck stuff.Thats just the way I see it though I could be wrong.
