shaving dash and headlight controls

on my 98 s10 i want to shave the dash.i want to fill in where the headlight controls are on the left side of the steering wheel. my question is do i have to keep the control or can i just get rid of it? and if i get rid of it what should i do, just unhook the control or just keep the control hook up but throw it behind the dash?

i velcroed mine under the dash and did away wit the rheostat. if i go to a show i can just tuck it outta the way or i can just leave it.
