hey guys i am putting a new head gasket on my 91 2.2 fuel injected motor. i pulled it all apart and got the info off of shopkey5 of how to put it back to timed. it had not jumped timing it was just getting oil in the water. the timing marks show top dead center on the cylinder is 4 timing mark on the camshaft but according to the shopkey5 it should be 1. i am confused please someone enlighten me before i put it back together.

is there a timing cover with a tdc mark? are the marks on the outer edge of the cam gear?

cam gear has mark and the shopkey says the TDC is the keyway straight up on the crank like with most cars.

the numbers on the cam gear do not correspond to cylinders, but to late or early timing of the cam. there is a timing MARK on the cam gear that corresponds to a cast pointer on the timing cover. Use that.

russ though my problem is my timing belt on and my crank key at 12 shows 4 o the cam gear and the distributor is at number 4. it should be at number one cylinder? i am lost

russ i am an idiot i was 180 off. i got it now. number 2 is pointed at on cam gear and the everything is good. i am sorry for the dumb question

cylinders 1 and 4 are at TDC at the same time, so are cylinders 2 and 3. The firing order is 1342, with a cylinder firing every 180 degrees of crank and the "linked" cylinders (at TDC simulataneously) fire every 360 and each cylinder by itself fires every 720 degrees.

It sounds to me like you just need to turn the crank 360 degrees, till the crank keyway points up again, and magically your distributor will point at #1.
