i just ordered a rollpan/tailgate skin combo and taillight fillers from fbi. i've read in a few posts that you have to remove the stock skin from the tailgate. whats the best way to do this? i also heard someone say fbi's sheetmetal was no good but this person didn't elaborate why....whats your 2 cents? the only reason i used fbi is because a friend of mine is a dealer for them and he got me a good price on these pieces. he met someone from fbi 3 years ago at a show and has ordered quite a bit since then.

You have to grind the sides of the tailgate until the skin splits from it. Then cut it on the backside of the tailgate, where it is crimped, welded, etc. Use a spotweld cutter if it is attached that way. Bottom works pretty much the same way, then weld the new skin on.

cool...i was lookin at it last night trying to see how it was constructed. i can see where its crimped on. i was almost ready to attack it with a grinder but i figured i'd do a little research first. thanks for the reply.

A block of wood will also come in handy when folding the new skin over the shell of the tailgate.

The ones I have seen, did not fold over. You just welded them at the edge and smoothed it out.

if you ordered a skin/pan combo..you dont need take the skin off your tailgate..take the gate off and brace it up with tubing and weld the new panel on

A skin and pan are separate. If you get a full skin, or cali combo, whatever you want to call it, thats when you removed the gate completely.

"just ordered a rollpan/tailgate skin combo" that to me meant a full skin combo
