I was coming down the road today in my 720 and let off the gas cause i was coming up on slower traffic and guess what.... it didn't slow down! so i had to ride the brakes and cut it off at stop lights just to make it home. My throttle cable is still connected at the pedal and at the carb and moves when i hit the pedal. So my question is... what else could it be?

Is there still a return spring on there to pull the throttle closed? It may have broken off or come off.

have you checked the linkage / grommet through the firewall. also look at the carb, most have spring assemblies. i just sounds like you got a kink in the linkage, a spring issue, or some gunk built up somewhere along the linkage from the cable to the carb.

you can disconnect it at the carb and see how the play is. if thats free then hook it back up and disconnect it at the pedal and check it.

i once had this problem after i left an upholstery shop - it was simple, they had let glue get on the back side of the pedal causing it to stick...

good luck!

ok i disconnected the throttle cable at the carb and crank it up and it was still at wide open throttle. All the springs seem to be intact and working. Any other ideas? It would be a vaccum issue would it?

if the throttle is vacuumed controlled, maybe.

try hitting up google for that issue. its amazing that peeps have similar probs all over the usa and you can find it on google. ha

Sounds like your accerelator pump is stuck if you have disconnected the cable and and it still does it. My old mazda did it to me one time after being stored. I wound up replacing the carb instead of tearing it down to clean it up. Let us know what you find out.

You'll never guess what it was! The rubber piece that goes on the carb before the air cleaner was old and deteriorated.... a piece of it fell down in the carb and stuck it open. I took a piece of wire and finally got it out. Thanks guys for your help.
