ok i know a guy selling a s10 with the 4.3 for dirt cheap. but the motor is gone. so what are my options? is it going to be hard to find another 4.3 and can i use a newer one out of a newer s10 will it bolt up to the 91 tranny? and last resort can i slap a 4 cylinder in there?

if its an automatic you can probably find a 350 for cheaper and get the 2.8 frame side mounts and motor side ones from summit and then you'll have a v8 in it

2.8 v6 and the 2.5 4 cylinder share the same trans..a 350, 4.3 and all other chevy v8's share the same bolt patterns on trans...a 350 turbo, 700r4, 200r4, 400, 4l60e,etc all are the same..so u will have to get another trans if you swap to a 2.8, and they arent worth a shit..2.5 and 4.3 are good motors..you can use a newer 4.3, but will have to get an an intake to reuse that tbi..after 94 the engine went to vortech heads ...the bolts on them go straight down instead of sideways like your engine..finding another 4.3 to replace yours should be really easy..they are awesome engines and last forever..they are an exact replica of a 350 minus 2 pistons..all brackets will interchange, as well as the pistons...

replacement 4.3 are easy to find..not worth doing anything else for daily driving. I have a 4.3 with 230,000 miles...and no sign of quiting soon. The hp/torque specs on the 4.3 is actually better than alot of early small block v8s. OHH and being a 1991, i would suggest doing a long block (with warranty)...
