If you've never welded on sheet metal before, I would take the time to practice on a scrap piece(old inner fender or something). The general rule is low heat, and only tack it one tack at a time, allowing time for it cool between each tack.

You will want to switch sides, tack once or twice on one side then go to the other side...repeat this until your all welded up....Like Kaoss said TAKE YOUR TIME!!!

Sometimes when you start at either end you will have some warpage in the center, especially if you've never done it before.

I've always "stitched" the metal as I was taught. Start a tack at one end, then place a tack every 1-2 inches and work you're way across. When you get to the end start over again overlapping the next row of tacks slightly over you're previous row to slowly form a bead. Doing it this way you are less likely to blow through the metal and the puddle from the previous tack will help draw away some of the excess heat off the thin sheet metal.

The thinner the sheet metal, or smaller the area to weld, the more time you will want to allow for cooling in between tacks.

Edit: As for the gas, if I'm inside I typically run 10 psi, if I'm outside I'll set it for 15 to help make sure enough is getting to the weld.
