A guy i work with is selling a set of 18" wheels for a price i cant pass up. They will fit my wifes accord. The wheels are black with a polished lip. I want to paint the black the same color blue as my wifes accord. Whats the best way to go about this? Scotch brite or 320 then a adhesion promoter like duponts 222 then base and clear? Maybe prime them first? I want this to be a one time deal. will the heat cause the paint to blister? Not painting the lip just the black part of wheel. Thanks for any help I can get

Get them powdercoated?

You shouldn't need to prime them. Just scuff with a red scotch brite then spray adhesion promoter or sealer. Then base and clear. Heat shouldn't be a problem.

shane is right, they are already painted just scuff and shoot

222 has nothing to do with adhesion, its a colour blender.

Just scotchbrite it, then shoot the colour, it will be fine.

DuPont 222S is a Mid-Coat Adhesion Promoter.

just scuff it, i would use a grey scotch brite w/ dish soap and do it wet, that way itll get any dirt and grime off of it. wash it good, then clean, tape, prep, ,seal, base, clear.

Thanks for the help. I figured i was on the right track just wanted to see what some other painters thought. Like i said i only want to do this once. If anybody else knows a better way or has had problems painting them let me know. im open for suggestions. also with the sealer? how many coats should i put on? also should i put activator in the base to help resist chips(dont know if that would be a factor)?

If your gonna use chromabase you should seal them with the right value shade ,cause choma doesn't cover to well. I have used chromabase and then cleared them with Elite clear also made by Dupont. The Elite paint is what comes on Peterbilts from factory. Its pretty thick and chemical resistant.

Scuff them up so all the shine is gone.. tehn wax and grease remover, wipe them off twice... Seal them with the same colour sealer as was used on the car if possible... then base and clear.

i like shades of gray vs colored sealer..anways...on a wheel like that....if its a two piece wheel so that your paint edge is gonna be in between the two...then id maybe seal it and paint it..but if your edge is gonna be just a hard edge on the wheel i would use a grey instead of red pad and just base over it so you can keep the edge to a minimum
