I would really like an overdrive for my 88 and I dont want to spend the money swapping to a 4l80. Will a 700r4 hold up to the weight of a 454 squarebody crew cab dually? Very very rarely would this truck get a trailer hooked to it, thanks for any help

I have a 83 with a 350 and 700 out of a 91 burban and haven't had any trouble with it I've towed a 01 silverado with it for a will

700r4 should hold up fine as long as you dont beat the hell out of it. And keep it cool, especially if youre going to tow with it. Put the biggest cooler in you can get. I towed a 26' camper with an astro van with a 700r4 and never had any problems.

It can live, but as others said don't beat on it. It is not intended to be put behind a big block, or even a moderately stout small block. Get happy with the loud pedal and you'll shell it out.

Well that doesnt sound really confidence inspiring Maybe I should just find a good 4l80 donor and spend the $$ on a controller.

I guess it just depends on how hard you want to drive it. If you want to run hard and go fast then go for the 4L80.

i was warned not to use a 700r behind my 454.i think it was townasty who had been thru like 4 700r'sin his trk..so i went with a 4l80e and that tranny is a smooth strong sumbitch..

Look for a used Gear Vendors overdrive if you are on a budget.

I wouldn't trust one. Seems like for every guy who says it'll be fine, there's 10 other guys who say it won't last long.

OD on these trucks is an expensive endeavor. You really only have 3 choices: Gear Vendor, 4L80E or NV4500. Each with their own set of pro's and cons, and none of which are cheap.

Been through a few 700's
went back to a TH400 with a GVO.
Havent looked back since.
This setup has taken some REAL abuse.
