Well if you want to keep your stock tranny and rearend buying a stock engine would be best. If you want to swap to something bigger you'll have to ditch that tranny and rearend. Depends how much money you want to spend and time. I always thought when it comes time to do something major to my stock engine like replacing it, is a good time to do a engine swap to something with some balls.

when i was wondering the same thing... i priced checked the mazda rebuild, and the 350 rebuild...it would cost @ $1000.00 TO just REBUILD MAZDA. no extras, no header...etc...
now if i spent $1k on v8 just basic rebuild, seals etc.. carb fed basic... = more power, sweet mod ( swap) and some "GO" juice...yeah you will need tranny and rearend, but we mini truckers can "wheel and deal" u know what i mean...easy would be just rebuild mazda...thats my 2CENTS...iwent with the swap...

I had a friend of mine put a chevy v6 in his truck carb'd very easy swap and he didn't have to do any clearancing for nothen. Used a diff tranny tho so i don't know how it would bolt to yours or not. It was easy to wire up too! But yeah just get an old carb'd 350 and th350 and a short drive shaft and throw it in. It'll be funner to drive and look better under the hood then that mazda motor!

Rebuilding the stock motor will cost nothing get on ebay you can get a complete kit with pistons for under $300 get it for .030 over nad then get your block bored to .030 over and get the pistons put on your rods about $80 round here for that and take about 8 hours out of your time to yank it out and put it all together and bam you gotta new motor

im doing a 12a swap in mine. the 12a bell housing will bolt right up to truck tranny so its a pretty easy swap.

if I were gonna keep stock, I'd tear it down to the block, get it boiled out and rebuild it from there. I'm not a person that just bolts the stock used stuff back on so a rebuild for me would cost alot more. As long as your not gonna add any performance to the engine the rebuild doesnt cost to much. Once you start adding performance on you might as well buy a small block. Exspecially for the little gain you'll get spending more money on the mazda engine. If your gonna show just do a swap. Its a huge mod and gets more people's respect. I always think I've seen some sick mazda's with stock engine, but whats worth all the time if you just keep the stock engine? But I've also learned in the minitruck world not everyone is concerned about horse power and having a sick engine.
