I always suggest a sealer coat, it evens out the base and if you record the sealer colour and number of coats thruout a job it is a lot easier to match up later down the road. I would use a darker grey sealer, it will make the gunmetal cover with less caots and cover better as well.
Now as for matching the paint up later, well if you are good then yes you can panel paint the truck and it will be 99 percent accurate, but keep in mind that you have to know the exact gun orientation, stroke overlap, and number of coats to match it right.
Also I would suggest that with metallics you go with the base clear route, the problem with spraying metallic paint in a single stage application is tha the metallic particles never lay down 100 percent flat, and when you colorssand and but metallics there is always a chance of getting a blotch appearnce, or in some cases changing the colors as some paints used died or coated flakes, and by sanding you can very easily remove this coating exposing the underlying colour of the flakes.
