98 and explorer rearends

Does anyone know what rear axle the 98 and newer explorers use and how wide they are?

i think the 95-97 are the same as the 98+ but im not 100 % on that i know in 95 they started the disk brakes and in 98 they changed the body style other than just the front end. the axel dia should be like 3.5 as far as a link tab would go. dont know the with though sorry

98 and up have differnt gears. they are 8.8 and had a factory installed limited slip with disc brakes. most of them were 3.73 or 4.10 i believe.

Thanks for the info. Im putting a 300+ hp 302 in my nissan and was wondering if I would have to narrow an explorer rearend to make it fit.

yes you will its 1.5 inches wider than a ranger axle. 95-01 they are 8.8 31 spline axles. most are trac loc w/ 3.73s or 4.10s. some were open w/ 3.08s and 3.55s were half n half w/ trac lok and open.

a yota rear is prob a better idea...

Try a 90 ranger rear I believe they are 1.5 narrower then 98+ ones,only thing otherwise they have drums unlike the newer ones have discs

definatly narrowing the ford, go search yota scene or pm seth(twistedminis) about his rear disc setup. plus u cant weld to the center section on teh explorer rear axle. and it has an ugly speed sensor. the 91/92 8.8s(only came in 4.0 rangers those years) are narrower, but there still a 28 spline axle and most are peg leg. the only 31 spline 8.8s are in fx4 rangers and 95 up explorers.
