i just cut out my rear fenders and ordered some wheel tubs. but i won't have access to a welder for about a month. so...i have some extra mdf laying around that i could use temporarily to keep a rock from going through the rear window, etc. but what can i do about it getting wet? its my daily driver so it will see some rain. paint? wood sealer?

use the tubs you bought but find a way to secure it in the area that you will be later welding it. for example if you can screw or rivet it to the bed floor or cut up a bunch of strips of metal that you can use as tabs and make those the connection between your bed and tubs.........MDF? = WTF?
