So today when I crank my engine, for a split second the engine just stopped. Engine finally turned over and noticed my check gauges light came on. Oil pressure was pretty low. Drove a few miles and then noticed my temp gauge was getting hotter as I waited at stop light. But as I started moving it dropped back down. When I got to work, i checked oil and it had plenty. I checked upper rad hose and it was hot. Radiator had plenty of coolant. Someone told me it could be a oil pump. Any one have any other opinions. It is a 89 chevy 350

i got a 93 chevy and my oil gauge read low and bounced around and it was my oil sending unit. my temp gauge has done the same thing but my thermostat was sticking and unsticking.

or a bad temp sending unit might be telling your ecm that your overheated and shutting your fuel off.
get it on a scan tool and see what code it has in it.

The guy at autozone told me it could be the oil sending unit also. He told me to either buy a new one or just to use 1000 sand paper and clean it a little. But oil gauge was also bouncing around before today like yours Josh. I will try the sending unit thing first. I will probably go ahead and spend the extra $10 and replace the thermostat also. I just bought the truck and from what I've changed already, the previous owner never changed anything in the 157,000 miles.
