etching primer?????

ive heard on bare metal u need to spray etching primer on before u go further...now my question is do u need to spray the hole truck or just the areas that are bare?????

we just finished priming my truck 20 minutes ago, used etching on the bare metal and high fill primer over that/the whole truck, guide coat and now the fun part, sanding, sanding, sanding.......

etch primer just goes on bare metal.

i heard u good just use a good epoxy primer over ur bare metal and welds then do body work on top then spray a surfacer

well i have already started some filler work before knowing that it needed to have etching primer first. what do i do now. do i keep going or do i need to sand it all off and spray it then start over...im on a budget and dont have tons of cash to throw away on 45.00 a gallon rage filler....so i have to use only as much as needed...i havent any room for waste...obviously i now know and theres more filler work to be done and i will spray it first...

You do your body work, then any bare metal areas you put etching primer, but not over your filler. Then primer surfacer, wet sand, then primer sealer and your ready for paint.

etching primer is old technology that isnt worth spraying out of the gun with todays products goin over it. Spray it with epoxy like RJ said and ur good...........

here we go....the etch, epoxy debate.

I prefer etch for certain applications. First off it has a chemical adhesion as well as a mechanical adhesion. It actually bites into the metal, whereas the epoxy just sits on the metal.

They both have good adhesion, but etch is the only one that will chemically adhere to the steel. You also want to make sure you dont use it on sandblasted areas, thats what epoxy would be for. Dont spray etch over bodywork.

But as for your question, you should be fine etching around your bodywork, if your metal is prepped course enough then your filler will stick to it anyways, the etch will create a good bond for your undercoats.

i would use DTM on the metal then just prime over that....

yeah i would def not say etch is old technology..they both have there respective uses, i myself use etch primer on a daily basis at work...only time ive used epoxy is on large bare metal areas that have been blasted or that are gonna sit around and get metalwork done to them
