I am getting ready to install a steering rack out of a mustang into my wagon. The wagon has a Toyota front clip, if that matters. My problem is I do not know where or how to find center of the rack to determine where to mount it. I have a pic below of it and where center is from tie rod end to tie rod end does not look like center. I do not know what the insides of a rack look like so I dont know how or where it moves side to side.

End to End it measures 57inches. But from mounting bolt to end on driver side it is 20inchec and mounting bolt to end on pass side it is 22inches. Any help would be great!

If you look at most MII kits one of the rack mounts is slotted. Probably because one side varies, and one is a constant for most racks they use.

Also. I need to narrow it to 46inches...any ideas? By centering the mounting bolt holes this rack will work but if thats not true center then I have a problem.

Just looking at it I don't think centering the bolts will work. Look at the distance from the DS mount to the edge of the cast, and do the same on the PS. The PS looks to stick out farther before the boot, which leads me to believe the pivot is out there towards the boot.

I guess I'm gonna have to go to the salvage yard and pay $1.00 to get in and look at some mustangs and do some measuring. I really hope this rack works but right now I'm not too sure.

Since I can't sleep, because this is driving me nuts, I decided to do some homework on this stuff. I found lots of pics of Mustang II crossmembers and the bolt holes are not centered. I'm going to assume that a newer mustang rack mounts the same. If I take the tie rod ends off and measure tip to tip that sould give me the center of the rack to line up with the center of the vehicle...correct?

You shouldn't have to take anything apart. Just measure from tie rod to tie rod and divide by two.

Wouldn't that be assuming that the car(from the salvage yard) was in alignment? It was not a front end collision but It could have been out of alignment. Looking at Mustang II parts, the tie rod ends look shorter, which would be great for me. But I'm not sure if they will fit on this rack. Also, I need to figure out if the Mustang and/or Mustang II tie rod ends will fit in the Toyota spindles.

Okay, take the tie rods off completely, and measure to the end of the threaded shaft. They should be the same length.

take the boots off, measure the body of the rack. find the center of that, that should be the center of the rack. mustang/ranger/aerostar/explorers all use similar racks and the same tie rods, and they are close to going in toyota spindles, but if you get a bumpsteer kit, it makes it a lil easier using the heims.
