how hard would it be on an 81 toyota? i dont know how much its shorter, and where it is in relation to the wheelwell. im finding alot of them for sale as longbeds, and im thinking its just something along the lines of, shorten frame rails, shorten bed, shorten fuel line, brake lines, tail light wiring and run a stock junkyard 2wd shortie driveshaft. am i missing anything?

i went the opposite on my 88 & i had to weld in a stock carrier bearing x-member & use the 2 piece driveline. it would be just as easy to go from long to shortbed. do you have a donor bed or are you going to shorten it? if you're cutting up the bed Eric's right.

there is a really nice 4wd bed on ebay right now for very cheap in CA somewheres. $100.

Suggest since they are not double-wall beds that you are best served to just get a complete short wheelbase bed and backhalf the truck to fit it.
ON my hilux it was longer ahead AND behind the wheel well, so you'd be shortening the bed on both sides of the arches, and that would be a LOT of work in comparison.

well, i got a 78 yota today. i think im going to just bob about 2 feet off the back. leave the front of the bed how it is, and extend the front down to meet the cab. thanks people.

I shortened my datsun longbed down to the same as a factory shotbed ,as someone already said you have to cut it in front and behind the wheelwell to get the right proportions. just takes a bit of planning to figure out how to do it in the easiest way its really not that hard to do and a single wall bed is easier to do then a double wall
