i dont have any problems with the alt or compressor running but they do go out really quick mine didnt even last 6 months sound like your alt is working to hard or you have a wire grounding out between the alt and battery

is there a way to bypass the factory wiring and run bigger wire from the alt to the battery

i ran 4 gauge from my alt to my yellow top for 2 reasons:

because i'm running a 160 amp alternator (http://www.northwestoffroad.com/parts/alternators.html)

and because i just plain wanted it to look good with the blue wire instead of a red 10g

i don't see why you can't...i don't think it would hurt, but then again i'm no electrician so hopefully someone else will chime in in case i'm wrong.

my buddy (car audio installer) did most of my electrical so i'm not 100% sure. i do know there's a 250 amp ANL fuse on my 4g input from the alternator & one for my 0g output on my battery topper (http://www.tsunamionline.com/product.php?id=300) but i don't know if that's just because that's how it came, or if he did it for a reason, but i'd ASSUME it needs to be fused, but again...i'm no electrician

good luck man...
