Curious as to what would cause it on a Pre-Taco.

Got leads to one that a friend of mine used to own.Said about 6 months ago, ish was fine. Now, its witha new owner and whines. Was told it was low on fluidsat one point in time and the worst part could alreadybe done...

Throw-out bearing, pinion angle, what?

Mine whines in 5th, obnoxiously loud. Its got plenty of fluid.

So I got a newer 5 speed.

i noticed my old W56 made alot of noise. didnt use fluid, but it made noise. my W50 is alot more quiet, so i think mine was just beat and old.

So it's probably shot?
Also, is 183k high for the Toys?

My old ranger had like 240k and it was getting worn...

mine has 214k on it and I drive it like I stole it and it's quiet as can be, at least for now and it doesn't use any fluid. my taco made some noise when I had it like an inch off of the ground but I can see why with the pad pinion angle it had.
