F yo 465 nucka... NV4500 or nothing!!!

I wouldn't worry too much about the late model version, could be tough to find as very few of the TBI-era trucks came with the 465. That lean cruise switch is just an MPG thing that I doubt contributed much in real world terms. Maybe the trans is about a whopping 2 lbs. lighter because the top cover on that one is aluminum.

Seriously though you oughta hunt an NV4500. Look at it this way. Both the SM465 and the NV4500 have a super low first gear. You won't be using it. So instead of a 4 speed...you'll really have a 3 speed. At least with the NV4500 it'll be a 4 speed...with overdrive. More gears to grab, more MPG, and lower highway cruise RPM's.

Sure. Find me a NV4500 for $350 and I'll do it.

Well, it wasn't $350, but I bought this whole truck for $600:

1998 C2500, 5.7, NV4500, 14 bolt full floater with 4.10's. Just needed an ignition module and it cranked right up and ran, drove, even had cold A/C!

Wasn't much left of it when I got through but the scrap brought $210, so I guess you could say I paid $390 for it. Not too shabby.

Gotta be on the hunt!

I paid $800 (too much IMO but I made it all back plus) for this but it also had the running Vortec 7.4, along with the NV4500...

And $300 for this, though the 3500HD version of the NV4500 would have been a PITA to transplant into anything else, it's way longer and has that crazy drum parking brake on the output shaft.

They're out there!

I'm bringing this back up...Richard, out here in Cali, we dont have too many deals like that....LOTS of vulchers out here. People think the NV4500 is the end all for manual trannys just like Dana 60 front axles('nother topic)...anyway,if a truck like those you posted could be had out here easy enough, I'D be all over it too!
Campy, I have the pedal assembly and floor hump for a 465 for your truck. Thought about using it in my Suburban, but not too sure. It's a mechanical clutch set up,not hydraulic.
