combo question

getting ready to do some crazy top secret bed work on my dime and was wandering if anyone has used there stock tailgate and a rollpan instead of using a cali combo. i dont need the whole combo so i think it would be a waste of money. Basically im going to weld them together and just fill in the gap with sheetmetal.

Been done many times. Make sure you brace the tailgate well so it will never want to flex or move.
