I am wanting to do a 5 lug conversion on my 92 dakota. I got the 5 lug axles but the spline is smaller than the 6 lug axles. I was thinking i could cut the larger spline of the 6 lug and weld it the the 5 lug shaft. I have a 110 lincoln mig welder. I know i need to bevel the edges and make damn sure its straight. So my question is should i attempt this myself or take it to a machine shop?
matter of fact just take your factory 6 lug axles and have them and your drums or rotors redrilled to the 5 lug pattern you want, we do it alllll the time
These guys are right. Welding your own axles is not a good idea. I've seen it done on a beater with nitrous, but keep in mind the the front axle was also made out of fence tubing. Either get your axles drilled or have new ones made.
