I have a 85 toyota pickup with a 22re motor in it. I just put all new gaskets in it from the head up. I did not touch the vavle train at all. So I got home this morning from work and went to park and as I put it through the gears to put it in park I notice I wierd sound like a loud ticking. When I put the motor in Reverse or in Drive the motor would bog down, lose power and start making a really loud slapping noise and then stop and you can hear when its about to start doing it again. So I was hoping that someone hear can piont me in the right direction to correct this before it gets worse.

here are some of the syptoms for you:
1. bogs down with foot on the brake in reverse or drive
2. looses power
3. creates a loud slapping noise for about 2-4 seconds and goes away
4. White smoke pouring out the exhaust pipe

Here is what I checked so for:
1. Oil = good, not milky
2. auto tranny fluid = good and at correct level
3. coolant = good and at correct level
4. Vacuum tested = reads a constant 19 in. Hg

I know this is kind of long but I figured this little chart could help out a little. Any help would be great right now.

white smoke pouring out of the exhaust. feel it, if it feels likes steam you know it is water. if you changed the headgasket without resrufacing the head sounds like the head is not level or cracked and you are getting water passage to cylinder wall leaking. that doesnt mean that the oil or water will show if it is a small amount.

Well I have been out there messing with it. I let it sit for about 2.5 hours and went out there to see if it still doing the same thing. Everything seems to be fine there is no smoke no more and the noise has gone away but the truck still idling a little rough. I did however find a vacuum leak by the idle mixture adjusting screw. Could there be anything wrong inside the tranny since I have a problem when I put it in reverse or drive because that noise only occured when it was in gear and as long as it was in park or neutral it was fine.
