Gentlemen,

Working on the GMC I get the request to make the truck stand out a bit more, its a calling card for attention for my clients in the racing business.

I am pondering the semi wheel conversion on the 83 GMC dually cc.

My idea is 22's but I dont want to rise the truck , perhaps lower it but it needs to remain functional.

Having looked high and low online, I reckon there are a few options:

1) get a full set at Tennessee wheels or other vendor at a very fair price , I spoke to Trevor Lockhart
Only problem is shipping/tax etc overhere which is extravagant.

2) get a set of 22,5' Alcoa's, I have ties into the semi-truck world so could get a very nice set new or used at a very good price. Most of them here are 8.25 width, or 9.00. I reckon 9.00 would be too much and I prefer the back tires sitting closer to each other as they do on a less wide rim
Only problem is there are no low profile 22,5 tires for obvious reasons and semi truck tires have all kinds of drawbacks on a one tonne truck

3) get a set of 22.5's milled down to 22.
I have access to many machine shops here as we construct many automotive parts ourselves. However, there don't seem to be shops that have ever milled down a rim . My technical view, looking at the typical Alcoa wheel, is that there is enough material to take a quarter inch off without compromising the strength. Its just that there is a bead where the tire sits in which must be replicated in milling them down.
only problem is, where to get the specs etc for the lathe to mill them down?

Adaptors for the Alcoa's appear to be plenty, at Tennessee or Arrowcraft. So thats no problem there, apart from the shipping/tax but hey, can't win 'em all.

Also, which tires in 22" will provide load index for a truck like this? Mostly it will be towing a normal 4000lbs trailer but in the future we might want to go fifth-wheel

I'll put up some pics of the truck asap but they are on my phone and all this typing is best done on PC

Your thoughts please

much appreciated.

my old dually is running 265/35-22 tires on the 22s.....i have pulled alot of bumper pull trailers with it.....majority being 10k lbs or less with no problems.....my new dually has 305/45-22s and i have pulled a ton of extremely heavy loads with zero problems.....but the 305/45 is really tall.....soon as i get a chance im gonna swap all them out on new dually to a 285/45

Milling the 22.5's isn't quite as easy as just taking off 1/4". The way the bead seats on a semi tire/wheel is different than a passenger car/lt tire/wheel. Somethings are just better off left for those who have perfected the method. I doubt you will find anyone willing to give up the specs as it would hurt their business.

I will be towing a 10,000lb bumper pull camper with mine using 255/30/24 tires.

Valid points and appreciate the replies, I realise that the questions aren't popular.

The thing is, shipping/tax (even my own wheels) to the US for milling costs in excess of

Where are you from? I know the pain, they are expensive enough here. I am only running 4 24's with 16's on the inside just because of cost. I could have built 2 non duallys for the money I have into 1 dually

I'm from Holland

Don't mind paying for product, just a bit of unnerving to pay much in duties
