i have a '94 fullsize chevy reg cab, and im about to finish my b/d but i have a question about strength. i reinforced where i cut the body mounts with 3/16 and ran good beads there. but everywhere else where i used 16 gauge i just tacked them in, but i tacked and stitch welded them so there are no holes, i was woried about warping. it dosant look that good not like perfect stacks of dimes, i wish i had a camera. will this be good enough? will it hold up? it was hard not to burn through the firewall and back wall.

thanks,

ok, if its fully welded like you would any anyother body panel yes thats good enough. If you had a problem not burning through then i would guess the welds were penetrating when they didnt burn through. But pics will help others chime in. I personally dont care how it looks as much as if its welded good. a sweet stack of dimes that didnt penetrate are worthless.

Sheet metal welding with a MIG is not likely to produce that stack of dimes look which is fine. The description of what you have done sounds like it will be okay. You can probably see the weld penatrating thru if you look on the backside of the fillers you welded in. It helps to use a piece of copper or brass as a backer when doing butt welds where there may be small gaps to fill from slightly uneven cuts. These can happen on areas like the firewall and rear cab wall when doing a BD. The backer will soak some of the head and help stop burn thru. It sometimes takes a second person to hold the backer while you weld but it leaves the other hand free to hold a beer so you can probably find someone to do it fairly easily, lol.
