Have a 2001 F150 with 5.4l with just under 60,000 miles on it. Under moderate acceleration at any speed the truck spits and sputters, and after a few seconds it runs normal. Heard it could be egr valve clogged but I dont have any trouble codes. Any help is appreciated.

about 1000 miles ago for a start and die problem. The filter was clogged pretty good. The gas that did come out looked black.

mine did that and it was the egr, but i had a check engine light. maybe a plug or one of your coils? mine did that too when i got water on one of the coils. did you spray down your engine compartment?

sounds like one of you coil packs is going out... very common on F150s and doesn't always through a code, sometimes it will through a "misfire" code on the cylinder. first pay a mechanic 20 bucks to take a computer out and read exactly what is going on, they can usually diagnose stuff like that pretty quickly just by looking at what all the computer is doing. if it is a coil pack best to go ahead and just replace all 8 while you are doing it, will be expensive but keep you from having this problem over and over if you only replace one at a time.

A common problem with the 5.4l motors is the boots on the coil packs trap moisture inside of them and cause the spark plugs to fail intermintently. Replace the boots on the coil packs along with the spark plugs and that should fix the problem. Usually the coil pack itself isn't bad and its alot cheaper to replace the boots. I've fixed two trucks with this problem.

I agree with Clint and Trent, sounds like coil, I couldnt get a code or anything, but that is what it ended up being.

mine did the same i had replace two coil packs. there not cheap either i think they were 50 each. but you can buy some off ebay for 80 bucks for eight i don't about the quality of them but it would be quick and cheap fix.
