My ex has an 89 b2200 with a weber 32/36 carb on it. It idles fine and drives fine, but when im revving the motor up the carb will catch at a high rpm and hold that rpm even if i let off the gas. It will hold itself there for a second then let off. Its annoying at best, it makes people think I cant drive a stick! Im stumped as to what could be making the carb do this. Its an electric choke but its not hooked up if that makes a difference. Any help would be appreciated!

Mine did this when I had a vacuume leak. It is real annoying. Does it stop when you slap the gas petal with your foot? If so it may be the choke getting stuck.

Yep, mine did that too when i first installed it. the High idle adjustment screw was turning on me. It would take forever to kick down from high idle. I would adjust that screw and make sure the throttle cable isnt catching on something.

yeah it does it when im shifting tho and giving it alittle gas to go to the next gear. Sometimes it will accelerate on its own when it catches. If im under the hood with the truck running, I can reach behind the carb and grab the linkage and manually rev the motor and it still catches, so that leads me to believe its not the cable. The only vaccume ports I could find were plugged off. So im left with the choke, but its not hooked up, unless its something goin haywire with it. How would I fix the choke from getting stuck shut?

How old is the carb? Has the truck sat for any length of time without being run? My old mazda wound up with a sticky accelerator pump after sitting for the winter which would cause it to hold higher RPM's on me.

maybe you can find some info here:

it could leak vacum from the base of the carb or the intake gaskets easy way to check if its a vacum leak is spray carb cleaner around the base of the carb and the intake or any where it could leak and if the idle revs up when u do that theres your problem

Mine did that aswell. What i found was that i over tightened the carb to the adapter plate which in turn stress cracked the plate creating a tiny crack which could barely be seen which created a vacuum leak. To fix the problem i took the plate off ground the crack out and welded it up, then milled the top and bottom of the plate to make it flat again, then didnt over tighten the carb after re-install. Worked fine after that.

If i ever use a weber again i will be making a billet adapter plate that wont crack.

sometimes the spring on the throttle shaft is enough to close the throttles, and sometimes its not. If you dont have any drivability problems besides this, like backfiring or low idle or stalling, you should go to the help section at the auto parts store and get a throttle return spring pack, there will be a couple in it. you attach it to the linkage on the carb and bolt it wherever to make the throttle close.

and an easy way to tell if you need one is if there is really low resistance when you push on the gas pedal, like its almost just moving freely. It should be stiff, not like a clutch pedal, but not like a noodle either.

My ext cab had this problem, I got a 1/2" spring off a 77 toyota and problem solved.
