most vehicles (obd 1, 2 or manufacturer specific) require you to have a certain set of numbers to match exactly to do an ecu replacement. the numbers can either come right off the old ecu or a certain digit(s) in the vin, or a combo of both. your local auto zone or napa will be able to help you out. you can't just swap them out since so many trucks had so many different options.
the most difficult one i ever did was a 1993 jeep grand cherokee. they needed to know 2wd, 4wd, 6 or 8 cyl, auto, manual, auto hubs, federal, canada, california, a/c, pwr steer, tranny model #, vin #, etc...i thought they were about to start asking for my social & mother's maiden name soon!!!
there are so many differences in ecu's that just about all you can do is call auto zone or napa & cough up the money for a new or reman one...sorry dude...good luck!
