I have a 2002 Chevy 3500 dually with 16 inch wheels. I am trying to do what I thought was a simple retrofit. I want to install 17 inch wheels. However, I cannot find 17 standard steel wheels for the inners. Anyone have suggestions? Anyone done this and if so, how? I can t believe how difficult this is becoming.

I don't know of any 17" steel inners, you can always run your stock 16 inners with the same outside diameter tires as the 17's on the outside. This is real common with 22" and 24" semis as it is much cheaper to run steel 16's on the inside. I run it this way with my 24's.

Around 2008-2009 GM switched to 17's. The ones with the 5 diamond-shaped holes. I know my 2009 3500HD had them, they also had 16's in this body style earlier than 2009 but I'm not sure exactly what year they switched over.

I have called a couple tire and wheel stores about using 16s on the inners and they say they have never heard of doing that. It sounds like it might work - IF I can find tall enough tires to make it work! I want to run Michelins, or BFG A/T.

The Chevy Dealership here says that 2008 was the first year that they offered 17s. But the bolt pattern will not work with my 2002.....

Use this calculator to find a tire that will match od. When 19's were popular for dually's they didnt have aluminum 19 inners so you had to run 16 inners and now with 22 and 24 semis, many run 16 inners. Cost to run semis on the inside is quite a bit higher and since you can't see them, many dont do it. As long as you can match the 2 diameters real close, it will work. Doesnt have to be exact but real close.

I'd like to hear more about that, because I've seen those exact same wheels on an 88-98 dually. A member here was running them.

According to a very quick search on the intarwebs, the pattern didn't change until 2011; and that 2010 and older are still 8x6.5" / 8x165mm.

can you connect me with that member???????

No need to contact the member, what I'm saying is that they are the same pattern...

Ignore the broken frame:

Those are 2008-2010 17" GMT900 wheels on a GMT400. Not sure what changed in 2011...
