If its a valvetrain tick it is probably a stuck or dead hydraulic lifter. Is the motor a high miler or has it been sitting awhile? It's possible that the lifter is just stuck due to sludge and can be freed up by running a good oil cleaner through it. I did a motor swap in a 93 I have and the motor ticked like crazy when I fired it up at first. The motor was a rebuild with about 2500 miles on it. It had sat for a while in the truck I pulled it from and the lifters got stuck. I ran some BG cleaner through it and it shut it right up. Give it a shot and if it doesn't work you will know its probably a dead lifter. Hope this helps

22r's don't have hydraulic lifters...they're ajdustable tappets on the end of the rocker shaft. all you need to do is adjust the valve lash with a 12mm wrench & flathead screwdriver. here's how...

it's on the adobe page 21 (the manual's page of EG1-35)
