Its necessary & its not necessary, its really all depends on what your wheel offset is. You could get away with trimming down the inner lip of the bedside as well.

it all depends on the offest. I narrowed mine so I could keep the stock fenderwells. Could have left it stock but then would have had to put tubs and I wanted to keep the bed as stock looking as possible. That way when I want to do a deep dish billet I'm already narrowed. Mostly depends on your future plans and how you want your bed to look
