I have a friend who is going to shoot my truck in primer in about two weeks and I have some questions. First off, what kind of primer do I need to buy from the paint shop? Also, I am wanting to go with a royal blue or midnight blue. Is either of those colors possible to achieve by tinting the primer? How many coats will it need? The truck will prolly stay in primer for awhile. Thanks for the help

well.. i have heard of people tinting primer with a paint effect. instead of a standard base that might thicken the primer. i'm not sure on the outcome though. and if its gonna be primer for a while just use some cheap shit. but make sure you get some enamel for your bare metal spots

thats a little off base.

If your going to be in primer for a while, I would use a decent primer with good holdout, so your bodywork doesnt bleed through and absorb moisture.

Your paint supply shop should be able to tint you a primer into the blue you desire, they will add a certain amount of toners to a white primer to get the colour to desire. However they can only add around 10% colour.

Or certain manufacturers like Sikkens and Sherwin Williams make pre-tinted primers.

Also, you need an etch for your bare metal spots.....not an enamel.

I hope that helps !

Cool, There isnt any bare metal spots just fading paint and say primer on my driver door as it was from a junkyard.

Ok, I looked on Sherwin Williams website and found the tinted primer. Ima check out a store next week to see how much its gonna cost. Was hoping not to spend more than $100 on primer.

I used valspar white primer and started with blue tint and then added a litle green. I think we reduced it a little but cant remember. Once sprayed and dried, i think i wetsanded with 800 grit

Just a thought...if its the primer look you are wanting, and plan to run it for a while you should go with something like Hotrod flatz. Because even a good primer sealer wasnt made to be without a top coat on it and be out in the weather all teh time. Eventually it could begin to rust or cause issues with body work areas. Primer just wasnt meant to be used as a finish coat.

And typically a decent primer sealer is pretty spendy. On the website that Hotrod flatz gallon kit is right around $100.

I could do $100, but the problem is my bed. I dont wanna spray anything too $$ on it cause its so shitty and will be gone by next summer. Any ideas on what to do? Should I just spray the entire thing and just respray the bed? How much paint would be needed just for the bed?
