Does anyone know if a place where I can get a short shifter for an 88 toyota it's got the 22r with a 4 speed transmission. The only place I have found so far was LC Engineering but it says it's for a 22re and I'm not sure if it will work on mine it's like $200 though and I was looking for something a little cheaper. If I can't find one I guess I'll just shorten the stock one.

Shortening the stock shifter is not a real "short shifter." The LC one is still stock length, but has a shorter throw. They do this by raising the pivot ball of the shifter, and extending the shift arm that pushes the shift forks inside your transmission. Its basically extending the leverage ratio so that you do not have to move your hand as far through the gears. If you shorten that shifter you will have a very short throw. There is a lot involved in making that product, which is why it is in the $200 range.

And it will fit your transmission. They only make them for the newer all aluminum center support 5 bolt cover transmissions. Which came out in late 84 or 85, not sure exactly.

I have the LC short throw on my 88(W55 trans/manual 5 speed).
Had to modify it, if I remember right the ball was a little too large, just had the remove some of the metal. LC wasn't sure why the problem, may have changed the design by now!!
It does work very well!!

thanks for the info. Yeah I figured that shorten the stock shifter wouldn't be the same as a real short shifter, I just wanted to move the shifter a little bit away from the stock bench seat but I will probably get the LC short shifter though for when I get the buckets. So you guys don't know of any other companies that makes a short shifter for the 22r

i shorted mine down to about 8" off the floor in my 92 with buckets. it does shorten the throw, but not as much as a true short shifter. similar to how you get more leverage, you are moving closer to the pivot and having less throw. i liked it. i cut it off below the black part, tapped it and had an extension made by a buddy. was like stock but shorter. had a pep boys ball on it. momo style. simple. i liked it alot. ive got the stick from a W58 supra, its way shorter but the ball is a bit smaller then on my W50 (78 pickup). bolted in and worked, just sloppy due to the small pivot. try that in yours, its cheap that way. it also puts the knob in a different location, forward i think. check that out.

i have the lc short throw shifter in my 93 it was money well spent i love it, when i installed it i went to toyota and got a new bushing the green one that actually goes in the cup. between that new bushing and the little one that goes on the end (which came with the shifter) it felt like a different truck.
