I dont quite understand the Rotary engine. Im told that some of the Mazda trucks had them ? Were they something special ? I was wanting to have my 2.2 rebuilt with a Mild cam and .30 over. I was told a Rotary engine would be better, and its more of a race motor ? Im confused and lost on the Rotary engine, if any one can provide more info on the Rotary please let me know. And what would be best. And no I dont want a V8, V6, swap....lol to many Mazdas with them...........Thanks guys..

the rotary to the best of my knowledge comes from the rx cars. They can be very raceworthy but you won't find many people to work on it. Wanna try a weird engine swap on a mazda go back and get one one the diesel motors out of the older models....think its a perkins.

You would be better off checking out wikipedia for info on the wankle/rotary engine. They are amazing little motors that make the same horsepower as engines twice their size, but they are qwirky.

old Nissan MT cover truck from my home town that had a 1985 1.1L Mazda RX-7 rotary engine in it. it looked cool but was slower than sinking whale shit. now i can imagine there are some mods to hop up the performance of it but im just telling u the only experiences ive had with them.

If you do not know about them it is best to stay away from them as most mechanics just don't know enough about them if you were to ever break down. They did come in the early and mid 70's Mazda Pick ups and also came in all RX7's in two versions one being a 12a and the bigger and more powerful being a 13b.

Cheverolet was actually the first to inquire on the Wankle Rotary's and put one in a concept Vette but that did not pan out. They problem with them is the wind speeds produced inside are supersonic and the seals would break down quickly. That problem was mostly in the earlier versions. They are awesome sounding with a almost infinite Red Line. There is less than 100 pieces to the engine and quiet simple to work on if you are mechanicly inclined.

They are also CHEAP as the older RX7's when they broke down the owner did not know what to do so they ended up getting junked. You can find plenty in most junkyards. And yes they are not to fast UNLESS you turbo charge them....then they are sick fast.

they are a powerful option if done with a turbo. many came stock that way. also, the older ones are carbed and even less powerful. the 13b came in the rx7s, but also in a lot of other mazda vehicles. wiki will list what all. fairly plentiful motor. they dont have piston rings, they have rotor "rings". stock ones were known to wear out a lot, but properly tuned FI and aftermarket "rings" they can be fairly good to go. i was seriously considering it for my yota. id like to use one someday in something. a mid-rear setup would be sweet.

they also do rev up to 7k stock. they have limiters to prevent going higher. they work on the process of a rounded triangle on a "spyrograph" style shaft. it sucks air/fuel in, compresses it, ignites it and exhausts it. still 4 cycles. only its in a big u turn. not in in/down/up/down/up/out setup. lightweight engines. simple. but, can be a bit finicky sometimes.

do some research. ask yourself if you like doing engine stuff yourself. consider the power gain against the rear ends that can take it and fit between your bedsides. then, if you like the idea, do it.
