Definetely do the sub-contract work if you can.. offer as many skills as you can and go into the shops with biz cards.. also get into pinstriping, go to local shows and hand out cards.. that will help you get going..
running a shop is a huge expense, i'd agree with keef, if i had the right skills that is what i'd be doing.
