Im getting ready to paint my car and im pretty sure im going to find some kind of rust, so what gauge metal would be the best for fixing rust? My steel guy says they only have 18 or 22 gauge. Thanks

They have a lot of sizes for different things, but for what you're wanting I would say 22 easier to form to what you need!

22 is easier to form but id go with nothing less than 20 guage just for the added thickness.

Depends on where its at if its a large panl or anything that needs rigidity then yes 20 or even 18. Small areas id just go 22. But either way between 18 and 22 is still a good choice.

i like using old hoods n stuff from teh same area as the vehicle. there usually free if hit or rusted and make excellent patch panel material.

^^^ Im with you on that. I get plenty of smashed fenders from work, and it works great, however you do have to strip the paint.

Keep in mind too that sign making shops, and sheetmetal shops have scrap bins out back behind their shops, and anything smaller than 20" usually goes into the trash.

I visit my local sign shop everytime I need to shave something, or patch something, because all their steel is clean, and non painted. I can also get many differnt sizes for differnt applications.
