shortening steering column

so, i wanna run a grant wheel. the 3 spoke with holes. they are kinda dish-y. like a 3-1/2" dish. and i dont want it closer to me really. i cant get it with a nice wrap from them direct, but through mooneyes i can get it with black or white vinyl wrap, or colors of glitter. im tossin between white vinyl and the orange or silver glitter. i dunno. so, i thought about shortening my column an inch or two to compensate for the extra wheel dish. what do you think? the bracket under the dash is just a U that clamps around. it isnt actually attached to the column. and the wiring is all outside the tube. it doesnt seem to be a collapsible style. it also doesnt have a locking steering wheel. its a 78 toyota. it looks like i could just section a bit out just past the rag joint and slide it down a ways. the steering box is just outside the firewall. anybody have experience with this?

I've looked into shortening the one for my 74 and it seems do-able. I haven't pulled it apart but from what I can see in the exploded diagram in the service manual it looks pretty straight forward. I need to shorten mine to work with a z'ed front clip though, not to fit a steering wheel. I'm not sure if you will get the colum cover back on after you shorten it without some cutting. I'm taking some off the other end of mine so I can add a pair of universals to line it back up once the steering box is moved up from the z. I think my issue is going to be sealing the shaft up where it passes through the floor. Time will tell on that one I guess.

well, i have a few inches from the plastic covers til the dash. atleast with this dash, dunno on the new one im doin yet since its not in. but i planned to cut it up and modify it to cover over the grant adapter to look more factory. then wrap it probably.
