I am not here to bash whoever's truck this is. I really want to know how this happened, as I am about to build a back halve for my truck, and this looks like something I would do design wise. The welds look good, and I don't see a problem with how it was set up. I take it that the metal snapped on the notch first, then the upward force broke the bag plate.

Should there have been another bar from the circular bag plate to the bridge?

Was the metal on the notch to thin?

Was it welded to hot?

Again, I am not trying to call anyone out on the work done on the truck, I really want to learn what may of happened, so I don't make the same type of mistake on my truck.

I am no professional, but that would lead me to believe it broke at the bag mount first. Then pulled from the notch. That metal looks pretty thin there. May have created a weak point when welding the cup. Looks like it broke after the weld.

that broke after the welds so thats alot to do with metal fatigue from weakening the metal from welding plus i believe this is on a 1ton dually so thicker wall metal could of helped but on a mini this setup would most likely been fine unless you hop of tow.............you can see the bag cup broke off where the weld penetrated thru a lil to hot look at the other unbroke side where its rusted at the same break point

I know the builder and he acknowledged after the 3rd owner got it and it broke that the metal was to thin for the weight of the truck. He actually apologized in a way to the new owner for his choice in such thin metal.so as long as you use the proper metal and welding tech. you will be fine

i recall from either a forum or his profile saying that it happened b/c the metal was too thin, and like SPICY2 said thats on a 1ton dually.

1 ton Dually? That sheds some lite on what happened. I plan on all box tubing on my truck to be 3/16" wall, and it is going to be a 1500lb Datsun

Another thing that could have been a factor is the function of the shock and the bag against the weight of the truck. The shock is goin the opposite direction of the bag and both are causing force on the mount.
