I have an 88 truck with a 22r and I have a problem that I was hoping someone could help me with. The problem I have is that when I turn the engine off it kinda studers a few times before the engine stops running completely, by studer I mean it doesn't want to turn off. it didn't do it when I first bought it, it started doing it recently when I changed the spark plugs to E3's, I don't know if that has anything to do with it. any help is greatly appreciated.

timing chain could be an issue.. sounds like the timing is off

highly doubt a timing CHAIN issue. "dieseling" is caused by incorrect timing (adjusting the distributor) or incorrect fuel/air adjustments on the carb. more often than not, it's the timing...

i rebuilt the carb on mine and problem solved. But yeah timing can be an issue too..

I would check the timming

so slack in the timing chain would not cause the timing to be off???

slack would be a cause for the timing to be off

the tensioner might be worn out

replace the tensioner and swap over to a double roller timing chain like the ones used on the 20R

if it runs fine other than the dieseling, it's more than likely the timing...toyotas rarely have enough timing chain slack to effect anything because the tensioners on 20 & 22r's are hydraulicly extended by oil pressure & if you have low enough oil pressure to create that much slack...you'd have a lot bigger problems than just the dieseling.

it's weird though cause it only started doing it after I put on some new spark plugs, I upgraded to the E3's, but I doubt that would be the reason. I've checked the timing and tried moving the distributor but it made no difference. Could that happen if there is components for emissions gone? cause the previous owners took out some canisters that it's supposed to have for emissions.
