So I have an 05 Saturn Ion sedan and its getting repainted hopefully before summer. For all you painters out where how much paint do you think I will need? Its getting two toned, blue on the bottom, black on top with pearl in both. The roof, Pillars, Mirrors, Window Trim, tops of the fenders and quarters, top of truck and the hood are going to be black and the rest will be blue.

Heres the list that my painter friend gave me. Let me know if you think this is enough and am I missing anything... right now the materials budget is about a 1/3 used up, but we're not sure on what clear to get yet so that price isn't included.

1qt black
2qt blue
1gal clear
Clear hardener (not sure on amount)
1gal reducer
1pt Blending clear
and then the pearl, but not sure how much

Any Input?

I dont see the reason for needing any blending solvent. You might be a little shy on the amounts too......2qts of blue should be plenty enough, and 1qt of black should be enough, to cover the outside, however it depends on the opacity of the blue. The inners will probably use another quart of blue, and another pint of black, if you 2 tone the inners.   Theres nothing worse than running out half way though a paint job.

On an ion the inner parts of the car are painted black from the factory. The panels bolt to the car (plastic car) so only the panels will be painted.

only you'll know where your tape line will be, but just from what i'd imagine it to look like, it sounds to me like you have the black & blue mixed up.  if you'll be spraying more surface area black, which it sounds like, you'll want 2 qt black & only 1 qt of blue.  it really depends on what materials you're using & their mixing ratio.  if you were using something like ppg dbc, it mixes 1:1 so 2 quarts of base would make 1 gallon sprayable which is a lot!  as far as your hardners & reducers, that also depends on the mixing ratio, so the same thing goes.  the blending clear you won't need.   also, i'm going to assume you already have the 600 grit wet paper, 1500 grit for the buffing, tape, paper, tack rags, compounds, plastic, scotch-brites, etc...if not, there's some more stuff too.  is your factory base in good shape?  if so you won't need sealer...any burn throughs?  if so, you'll need plastic primer (& hardner & reducer for that too)

the factory paint has some scratches... the hood might need a shot of primer, and the blending clear is for the pearl. I questioned that one too. I asked a friend. and let me post a basic rendering... might help to make this clearer. <a href="http://s304.photobucket.com/albums/nn186/artsar/?action=view&current=rendering.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn186/artsar/rendering.jpg" border="0" alt="rendering for 09"></a> I hope that helps. I'm thinking of throwing in a silver in there to divide the two colors. Thats not in the budget yet. but for the little paint I'd be using I doubt it will throw my budget off much. Also the shop painting the car will provide the masking materials ps: usually that html works, but apparently not here. I tried another one, but that didn't work either. The html link at the bottom is a broken link for me, so if someone can fix the pic that would be great

are you painting the jam's, and why you going to use blending clear for your pearl when you can spray it in your 1st coat of clear and spray 2 more coats or three depends on the person cutting and buffing the car. also if you have any deep scratches you will have to area block them or mud and prime, and if your going to spray tha jam's then 1 gallon will not be enuff, i would get 2 gallons of clear and 2 quarts of each color depends on the product your using but most paint mixes 1:1 so you would have a gallon of each and its better to have more than not enuff. but thats just me

I'm not painting the jams, since they are already black, BUT the door panel goes in. Since saturns skins bolt to the door there is a lip on the inside of the door   since I can't post pics heres a link to what i mean.   you can see on the back door how it goes in a bit. the whole jam doesn't need to be painted, just the small piece of the door skin that goes in   http://image.superstreetonline.com/f/jybrd/6576558+w450+h338+cr0+re1+ar1/2004-saturn-ion-quad-coupe-cool-feature-rear-door.jpg
