--------------------------------------------- Originally posted by crux131 The whining noise and the slack shifter may be two unrelated problems. There is a plastic/nylon bushing that snaps onto the bottom of the shifter where it slides into the top of the trans. These wear out over time. I had to replace one on my truck when I first bought it. This is what allows the shifter to have so much movement while in any gear( unless you have really screwed the transmission, but I do not think you could get into a gear if that was the case ). The part is about 7-15 dollars and is available at the dealership. It simply snaps over the ball on the bottom of the shifter. You can get the shifter out by taking off the shift console, then undoing the bolt holding the shifter to the trans...pull it out and inspect the little white nylon piece( if it isn't there then it needs replaced..haha ). This is all off of memory...and it has been a long time since I replaced this, so some steps may not be completely accurate. You'll figure it out pretty quickly when you get into it however. --------------------------------------------- This guy's on the money. Two diff problems. He covered the loose shifter. The whining noise could be the throwout bearing, common problem. It could also be lack of oil in tranny. Pull the fill plug on the side of the tranny. You should be able to at least feel the oil at the bottom of the whole. If it's not at the bottom of the fill plug or doesn't come out when the fill plug is removed, you'll need to top it off.
