is there a dpi formula for setting up a large file?  like instead of doing a 4ft by 8ft art file is there some way to calculate the dpi and size difference so i can use a smaller dimension in PS and it still print at the needed res?

I do mine in inches. For your example 4ft x 8ft.  I would do it at 4 inches x 8 inches at 1200dpi.

i do my banners at size and at 100-150dpi... and as far as a "calculation", its just simple math... take Brants formula for instance, once you blow up his file for 48"x96" to print, it's final dpi will be 100 dpi... 4 and 8 go into 48 and 96 respectively 12 times, so divide the 1200 by 12 and vuala...
