I just recently purchased a Canon XSi to take my photography to the next level. This camera has so many options. Just curious as to what lens is most common in taking pictures for coverage. My camera came with the 18-55mm.

Just looking for some tips and tricks.

Thanks guys,

Nick

The 18-55mm is a decent lens. It is what I am using right now, only because I can't afford what I really want right now. How much do you know about photography? Like are you shooting in any of the manual modes(such as AV, or TV, or even full manual)? Shhoting in auto is fine, and you'll get good shots, but once you learn how to shoot in manual mode, thats where things get real intersting. I started out with a Rebel XT, and now shoot with a 30D. I am in the process of trying to afford some L glass. I want the 70-200mm f4 USM IS lens, but the price tag is 1400 bucks. A good website for tips and info is POTN. It's a Canon users website, and has tons of info on it. POTN stand for Photos on the Net. Her's a link to it.... http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php? . The XSi is a great entry level camera, and should be a very good stepping stone into the DSLR world, as my XT was for me. I have heard nothing but good to great things about this lens, http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=149&modelid=11924, as a good walk around lens. Suposed to be one helluva sharp, clean lens. But it is about 5-600 bucks. And that would interfere with my big lens I want. But it will be the 2nd pc. of L glass I buy for sure. Right after this one, http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=150&modelid=14260 . There are a few good books out there also.  Now if you already know all about photography, then never mond any of my babbling HA HA HA.

i think you could shoot a whole show with just the 18-55mm. i also got a canon 75-300mm lens. i'm happy with both, but of course the L-series lenses are just badass. and i'm using a rebel XT. i want to get a sweet macro lens or fisheye lens.

i think the 18-55 mm is a good all around lens to start with. I also shoot with a 70-300mm lens and a 10-22mm lens both sigma.

Thanks guys for the responses. I have just been tinkering all around with the camera, mainly just trying to get a feel for it. I've had a couple people recommend me the 70-300mm lens.

I would go the other way. Find you a wide angle. It sucks trying to shoot a truck like a layed out 4 door dually at a busy show. There isn't always room to scoot back and get the entire truck. I know that wide angle lenses aren't for "Getting it all in", but who hasn't used a screw driver as a pry bar?   Had this truck been located in a tighter spot I probably wouldn't have been able to get it all:     And this would have been so much better with a wide angle:

don't get the 75-300mm. Canon has the new 55-250 IS lens. It is getting good reviews, cost's 250, and has image stabilization. I have the 75-300 and it is kind of a "soft" lens. Meaning it isn't super sharp,  at full zoom.  The kit lens is a fair lens, I  was just tossing out some options. I am trying to decide what lens I am getting next. Don't really have the money for the L-glass, but the 70-200mm f4 USM is 600 bucks. No IS, but it is L-glass, and that is better than IS . Or I might get that 55-250mm I mentioned to ya. I have not heard one bad thing about it yet.
