so ive had my truck apart doing some misc stuff and of course putting back together it doesnt work now.  anyway when the truck was running and the compressors were on you could hear them dying thats what first gave me the idea there was a problem. so i just walked up and unhooked the battery cable with the truck running and it died immediately. so i hooked it back up and started it again and tested it and it only was running at 9 volts.   So i took the alternator to get tested and their machine was broke so I just got a brand new (not reman) one cause it was under warranty anyway.  So i took my brand new alternator back and put it in.  Same thing. 9 volts running and dies when i unhook battery.  I tested all the points in the engine bay like the 2 big fuses and the fuse box and they all get power just 9 volts. I checked the other two small wires coming off the alternator and they are conected good on both ends and everything. I just dont get it.   One of my friends said it could be because the gauge cluster isnt plugged in. (dash is still out).   what could it be.  oh its a 97 f150 4.6 v8

and he is right, if the cluster isnt plugged in, the stator wont excite the alternator and jizz off 14v. there is a resistor in the cluster.
