I had my taco done and it passed with an exhaust and intake.  The guy said the only reason it was cool was because it was a Flowmaster exhaust and K & N intake.  According to him, those are deemed okay by the state.  I don't know how much truth there is to that, but it passed nonetheless.

The only way to pass visual is if your intake/exhaust has C.A.R.B. badges on them. I have both on my TBI spacer and my headers. Pretty sure the muffler doesnt matter as long as theres a cat in front of it.

a sticker or badge that comes with the item. like msd has a sticker i put on my core support to let smog techs know its in there and its smog ok

yeah and those c.a.r.b. legal parts usually cost a bit more too. i had to pay $400 to get a set of c.a.r.b. legal headers instead of a regular $150 set. gotta love california smog laws...

California Air Resource Board is basically a bunch of tree huggers who approve aftermarket stuff for emissions: Exempted parts are add-on or modified parts that have undergone an ARB engineering evaluation. If the part or modification is shown to not increase vehicle emissions, it is granted an exemption to emission control system anti-tampering laws. This exemption is called an Executive Order (EO) and allows the modification to be installed on specific emission controlled vehicles. Every Executive Order part or modification has an assigned number that can be verified by Smog Check stations, BAR Referee stations, or by the ARB. Check the link out.
