Its about that time of the year when i need to get my damn truck painted.  I had really really wanted to beable to drop it off at somebodys shop, and have them paint it, to save me the headache, but its not going to work out that way... again lol.

Bassicly, my truck is a stock dodge white.  I want to avoid the complication of spraying my door jambs and shit, so i want to stick with white.   My idea was to two tone the truck, using gloss white on top, and a flat white on the bottom, then have someone do some pinstriping down the side, and on the hood and tailgate.

I have a minimal amount of bodywork that i need to address, but after that i was planning on putting the whole truck in a coat of sealer, then spraying it all in the color white i want to use, the tape off my two tone line, spray the top with regular clear, then the bottom with a flattened clear.

Will that work?  or am i going about the flattening process the wrong way?  do i need a different base under each clear seperation?

Ive used the ready to spray flats in the past, but i want this one to have a coat of flattened clear on it to protect it better.

any suggesgions?

any comments?

any ideas that i can use to keep my truck overall white, but to add some style to it?

Taylor, the only problem I can for see is that you will have a huge mask line from clearing twice. Tipically you can polish matte clears to a shine. Perhaps that will work for you, by clearing the whole thing in a matte finish, then buffing the upper half to a shine. But you would have to check with your paint rep, and specific brands to confirm.

I just can't imagine that doing a two tone flat white with gloss white would look good, seems like it would look unfinished. I have always liked the idea the of crazy bright glossy graphics on a flat base though. Post some pics of the progress though, I'd be glad to see them!

i agree with brad ive done it on a black truck before and what i did is cleared the whole truck with regular clear then sanded what i wanted flatand taped it up and cleared that part with the flattened clear i see what brad is saying about the edge but it wasnt too bad the bad part i see of doing it brads way is if you get any dirt from your base or texture you have to live with it so if you clear the whole truck (shiny) and then sand it and use a flat clear over it your end result is alot nicer cuz if your just clearing over sanded clear its easier to keep it smooth and free of dirt

I'm not a pro but what about respraying the whole truck at once including clear. Then wet sand the complete truck finishing with a higher than normal sand paper and make the final passes with the sand paper uniform.Tape off what ever you want suede finish, then buff the shit outta the truck!peel your tape off and Walla.everything would be cleared and protected, and there would be NO edge. i have a pic of an old black leadsled that is suede all over with full gloss flames, looks gangster as fuck.

This is not an unusual idea, I saw alot of sems vehicles done flat and flat /gloss. The thing is you have to be willing to live with an edge where the two meet, theres just no way around it. If you look at the GB customs scion it has a definent edge but because it was ment to be that way the judges don't take off pionts for it. Ernies taco is the same way. If your hell bent on doing it white/white (which I have to agree, I don't think it will look right) you would paint the whole truck ,clear the whole truck, sand the whole truck and buff where you want it gloss. tape off your two tone then spray your flat clear. Then again you could just bring it down to KY and I'll do it for ya LOL! Going in the jambs is not that big of a deal, just leave the top white so it doesn't look funny when you open the hood.

cant you buff the tape line away and let it fade from gloss to flat??

I guess you could. Hell you can do anything, it's just paint. I would do a test panel first though. Who knows it might be the next big thing. LOL
